Journal of the Vacuum Society of Japan (hereinafter referred to as
`J. Vac. Soc. Jpn.') is a monthly publication for scientific papers in
the field of vacuum science and technology and their applications, such
as applied surface science, electronic materials and processing,
nanometer structures, plasma science and technique, surface engineering,
surface science, and thin films. J. Vac. Soc. Jpn. is intended for
reports of original research and review articles written either in
Japanese or in English. It also includes the proceedings of the annual
symposium of the Vacuum Society of Japan (VSJ), as well as other
(international) conferences sponsored by VSJ.
1. Articles
1.1. Original papers
1.1.1. Regular articles
Original reports comprising a complete, detailed, self-contained
description of an item of research. A Regular article should be limited
to 4,800 words including an abstract in English (6 printed pages).
1.1.2. Letters Short
submissions intended for accelerated publication, which report on a
brief item of research and important or new results. A Letter should be
limited to 2,500 words including an abstract in English (3 printed
pages).
1.2. Reviews Critical articles that provide an
update of an area of vacuum science and technology and their
applications. A Review should be limited to 6,400 words including an
abstract in English (8 printed pages). It is preferred in a Review that
the authors provide readers with an appropriate and sufficient list of
references.
1.3. Product notes Short
submissions relevant to an area of vacuum science and technology, but
not intended for commercial promotions. One submission should be limited
to 2,500 words (3 printed pages).
1.4. Lectures A type
of review with the intention of educating students, young scientists and
engineers. Historical reviews on science, technology or industry may
also be included. Lectures may be published in a series. A lecture
should be limited to 6,400 words (8 printed pages).
1.5. Others The editorial board of VSJ can
prepare other categories of articles; reports of conferences and
symposiums, laboratory reports, information boards, etc.
2. Prohibition of double submission of manuscripts
2.1. It is not permitted for (part of) the authors to submit manuscripts
almost identical to articles those are published in or submitted to an
academic journal, even if they are written in a different language.
2.2. Identical manuscripts may be submitted if they have neither been
published nor submitted as articles in an academic journal (e.g., an
annual report of a laboratory or a university), so long as the authors
or VSJ possess the copyright. A reprint of the previously published
articles must be attached in this case.
2.3. Manuscripts that have similar contents to articles those are
published in or submitted to an academic journal may be submitted as
manuscripts other than original papers (see 1.1), provided items
featuring vacuum science and technology are detailed and stressed. The
permission to reproduce copyrighted material as well as a reprint of the
previously published articles must be attached in this case. The
previously published articles must be cited in the manuscripts.
3. Procedure after receiving manuscripts
3.1. Manuscripts are received and dated at the VSJ editorial office.
3.2. All manuscripts submitted for publication are sent to a
referee. The editorial board decides acceptance in the light of the
opinion of the referee. The editorial board may ask authors to revise
the manuscripts in accordance with the review procedure. The editorial
board may ask authors to revise the manuscripts before
sending it to a referee if necessary.
3.3. When modifications are recommended, modified manuscripts with a
3.list of brief answers to the referee’s comments and the previous
3.manuscripts should be sent to the editorial board within 6 months.
3.4. Manuscripts modified significantly will be regarded as a new
submission.
4. Proof of articles
To correct mistakes caused by careless preparation of the manuscripts,
proofs of articles will be sent to the authors and should be returned
promptly to the editorial board of VSJ. Major alterations of the proof
should be avoided.
5. Publication charge and reprints
5.1. There is no publication charge.
5.2. An order form of reprints is included in the submission form. The
cost of reprints is paid by the authors regardless of the category of
the article, as below:

6. Copyright
6.1. The submission of manuscripts will be taken to imply that the
authors agree that the copyright of their article will be transferred to
VSJ when the article is accepted for publication.
6.2. A signed copyright transfer form must be delivered to VSJ with the
submission of a paper. Please contact the VSJ office if the complete
copyright is not to be transferred. The copyright transfer form is

6.3. The authors must attach a permission form signed by the copyright
owner(s) in the case of quoting someone’s publication to avoid
